Every year a wonderful event takes place to feature some of Utah’s finest fare provided by locally owned, independent restaurants, artisans and food purveyors from across the state. The event is hosted by Local First Utah, a company dedicated to empowering and recognizing the value and vitality of locally owned, independent businesses to our communities and our economy.

Come enjoy the tastes of Utah Valley’s best chefs at the 21st annual Taste of the Valley. This Saturday, some of Utah’s best local restaurants along with Communal, Pizzeria Seven Twelve and Mountain West Burrito, will be featuring different samplers for guests to enjoy. Beautiful heirloom tomatoes, juicy peaches and crisp greens can all be found at the Communal Farmers Market. Come see what Harward Farms, Lott Family Farms, La Nay Ferme and other local farms are offering. While you’re shopping around you can also enjoy a fresh slice of pizza from Jeano’s Pizza Food Truck.

Nearly 1,500 people enjoyed Taste of the Wasatch this year at Solitude Mountain Resort. Chef’s Vance Lott and Kris Ricks from Communal Restaurant, Stephen Lott from Pizzeria 712 and Ryan Peterson, restaurant manager, enjoyed serving attendees fresh and of course local corn on the cob with a shallot compound butter and parsley as well as white wine poached local peaches with Amarena Cherry Vinegar.
Attendees receive a plate and a wine glass and enjoy walking in the fresh mountain air while tasting various dishes from some of the finest restaurants in Utah.
“I loved Taste of the Wasatch. We are one of the only restaurants in the valley there and I really loved showing SLC who we are and what we are about. Multiple times people came to our booth to tell us that they’ve heard of Heirloom or that they even come down to our restaurants once a month. It’s awesome having supporters all the way up in SLC.”

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make the perfect salad? Or wondered how chefs get those beautiful grill marks on a flank-steak?
For the last three months, community members have been joining us at Communal to learn the arts of professional cooking. We’ve teamed up with local CSA, La Nay Ferme, to provide these cooking classes. Produce from the farm is harvested the morning of the class and featured in what is prepared and enjoyed at each class.
When/Where Classes are held on the first Monday of every month at Communal. Instruction starts at 6pm.

Details Tickets are $40 per person. Tickets include instruction and meal.
In the cooking classes this summer, the talented chefs, Vance Lott and Kris Ricks from Communal and Stephen Lott from Pizzeria 712 have taught participants the tricks of the trade, including: how to emulsify, making and using a bouquet garni, grilling kale, using fresh greens and vegetables, stuffing and trussing a chicken, cooking and using unique grains and many more specialty cooking techniques.
Attendees get to watch the chefs and ask questions throughout the class. Afterwards, everyone dines at the main Communal table to enjoy a lovely meal together. Everyone walks out the door with a pamphlet of recipes to enjoy professional cooking at home.
